Botox - What Is It And What Can It Do For You?

Botox is a substance that is injected into the patient. It is very popular in its use to reduce lines on the forehead and areas around the eye. It is otherwise known as botulinum toxin and although it's most commonly used for cosmetic 'enhancement' purposes, it has also been found to help children that suffer with cerebral palsy. One minor side affects associated with botox is dryness in the mouth.

How It Works

Essentially how botox works, is by blocking the signal that your nerves are trying to pass to your muscles. Only minute amounts when administering for cosmetic purposes.

FDA Approved

Because it was observed that the frown lines appeared to soften following treatment for eye muscle problems, clinical trials followed and in 2002 the FDA approved its use.

Possible Side Effects

Other than dry mouth, there are a few other possible minor side affects associated with botox treatment. Depending on the locality botox is injected, these may include a head-ache, drooping eyelids and sickness. Bruising around the area that is injected is also common, but short lived and does not affect you for a prolonged period.

Is It Safe

The average dose administered is just 75 units. When you consider that a fatal injection would consist of over 2500 units, you can see that the dose for cosmetic purposes is a minute fraction of anything that could be considered potentially harmful. Also when botox is used for cosmetic purposes the toxin is diluted and purified before it is administered.

How Long Does It Last

Botox cosmetic enhancing effects last for three to six months. It is a good alternative for people that want to change their appearance without wishing to undergo cosmetic surgery for longer lasting effects.
