Survey Shows Americans Are Stuck in Color Rut

When it comes to home decorating, most Americans don't take chances. According to a national survey, white is the most common color people select at home for bed linens and accessories, bathroom towels and dishes.

Many people find color selection difficult, the survey revealed. It's a whiteout in the bedroom, with 45 percent of Americans choosing white or beige as their primary and accent colors for bed linens. Most also steer clear of color in the kitchen; white or beige was again the most common color choice for everyday dishes. Furthermore, 34 percent have not changed their color themes in five years or more

To help people break out of the ordinary, House Beautiful magazine and The May Department Stores Company recently launched the House Beautiful Home Collection, a line of furnishings that helps consumers decorate with color like the professionals.

"Professional decorators often recommend a palette of at least three or four colors to make a room look pulled together, but that's where it becomes tricky for people to figure out how to decorate on their own," said Carol Williams, president of May Department Stores International. "We wanted to create a line that would simplify decisions and make decorating a fun and creative experience."

The line is designed to inspire people to make their homes as colorful and interesting as the pages of House Beautiful magazine. Each package contains paint-style color chips and decorator tips that encourage people to mix - but not necessarily match - elements of decor and create fun and unexpected color combinations.

"With the rising popularity of home decorating shows, we've noticed more interest from readers on how to decorate rooms themselves," said Mark Mayfield, House Beautiful magazine's editor-in-chief. "We receive questions every day on how to use color creatively, and this new collection offers the best of House Beautiful's style expertise while encouraging people to make rooms their own."
