Internet Directories - Underrated?

There is a huge misconception of Internet directories these days. People seem to think that the ONLY way to find information on the Internet is to use a search engine. This is a problem I would like to address in this article.

Over the past 2 or 3 years many people have been "brain washed" by google into thinking that their search engine is the only way to find quality information quickly. Some people such as myself believe that there are 100's of great resources available on the Internet besides google, msn, or yahoo. These resources, once found are usually much more powerful and precise than the search engines can ever be.

Internet directories these days are a great way to find the information or resources you need. Many have hundreds of thousands of hand picked links added to them. The Key word to remember in that last sentence was hand picked. Search engine results are not hand picked, they are in fact chosen by a mathematical formula or algorithm. Now im not saying the search engines formulas are crappy, im just saying that they are not the only means to find information.

We all know of the famous http://dmoz.org/ Directory. This directory has since become "over stocked" with resources and is a little crowded for my likings. However, it is still a wonderful resource. You can search it just like you can in a search engine. The thing is, ALL good Internet directories have a search bar on the site, letting you find what you need quickly and efficiently.

Ok, so I just told you how wonderful these Internet directories could be, now lets explain quickly how to use them properly. So say you are looking for car information and car websites. You could search the search engines for "cars" or what ever, OR you could search the search engines for "car Pdirectories" or "automotive directories" and go check out some of the directories and search the actual directory for what ever your looking for. This to me is a great way to find information and resources.

So there you have it! Remember Internet directories are a wonderful tool. They are also a wonderful tool for website promotion, but that's a whole different topic!

Cheers!
