The Minnesota University at the Twin Cities (Minneapolis and St. Paul) is one of the biggest university campuses in the country. The State College system, which has 35 universities, also offers postsecondary education. Other institutions of higher learning include Bethel College, Hamline University, Macalester College, Saint Johns University, College of Saint Catherine, Gustavus Adolphus College, Carleton College and Saint Olaf College.

Minnesota has a population in excess of five million. Over 6 percent of the population of the state is foreign born, compared to over 11 percent for the whole country. Most of the population is focused in the metropolitan area of the Twin Cities. The predominant race is white, constituting 88 percent of the population. The rest are black (about 3.5 percent), Hispanic (about 3 percent), Asian, Native American and others.
