Chords and knowledge of the scale the chords came from is all that is needed to make music at the piano. Now, most of you have heard of triads. These are 3 note chords that sound something Mozart or Beethoven might have played for their children to get them interested in piano. There's absolutely nothing wrong with learning triads - except for one thing... they're boring!
